Recycling and The Environmental Effects of Mattresses
Recycling is crucial in today's world.
The planet is filled to bursting with the leftover parts of human consumption, and unfortunately mattresses and bedding products are a big issue when it comes to recycling.
But we want to improve this.
We are proud to say we are working with the market leader in mattress recycling and who we also believe is leading the way in the sector in terms of maximising the percentage of each mattress that can be recycled.
The reality is that every year millions of mattresses end up in landfills, where they take up valuable space and release harmful chemicals and greenhouse gases.
This is not only bad for the environment, but also for the economy, as valuable resources are wasted and disposal costs are increased.
Recycling mattresses can save space, reduce emissions, conserve resources, and create new products and jobs.
However, not all mattress recycling companies are created equal.
Here at SleepHubs we have visited all the major mattress recycling companies in the UK and the unfortunate truth is that some may only recycle a small percentage of the mattress components, or send the rest to incinerators or landfills.
That’s why I was impressed when I visited one of the best mattress recycling companies in the UK: TFR Group.
TFR Group is a family-run business that has been operating since 2010, and has become the market leader in mattress recycling.
They have a clear purpose: to divert mattresses from landfill and create a circular economy for the bedding industry.
TFR Group operates two state-of-the-art facilities in Blackburn and Dewsbury, where they process over 600,000 mattresses per year.
They have a team of dedicated and skilled staff, who can strip up to 61 mattresses per day into their component parts, such as steel, foam, fabric, and wood.
They then sort, bale, and transport these materials to various end markets, where they are used to make new products, such as carpet underlay, insulation, animal bedding, and construction materials.
TFR Group is able to recycle up to 92% of the mattress materials, which is well above the industry average of 75%.
They also have a zero-landfill policy, which means that none of the materials they process end up in landfills.
They are constantly looking for ways to improve their recycling rates and find new outlets for their materials.
They also work closely with their customers, such as local authorities, retailers, hotels, and waste management companies, to provide a reliable and cost-effective collection and recycling service.
TFR Group is an excellent example of how mattress recycling can be done right, and how it can benefit the environment, the economy, and the society.
They are committed to their vision of creating a circular economy for the bedding industry, and to their mission of making mattress recycling easy and accessible for everyone.
